Bio
Marianne Turtio (b.1992) is a performance artist who combines performance practice with the theory of site-specificity. Marianne has a bachelor’s degree in Performing arts and she is soon finishing her master’s degree in Visual Culture, Curating and Contemporary art at Aalto University Finland. She has work experience from acting and performing to working as an art instructor and event producer.
In Marianne’s artistic works she researches the concept of space. She creates performances and video documentations inspired by the communication between her direct environment and herself; she is fascinated by different social themes which come up from that dialogue.
Artist Statement
My heart beats for nature, other people, sounds, poetics of the space, interventions and operating in public spaces. I find my drive when questioning the actions of humankind by using forms of performance, bodily practices, sound – and video art.
I have a long background in performing arts and participatory theatre. I see myself as a strong and vivid performer. I’m used to different audiences, publics and situations; my art can take a place in streets, festivals, gallery spaces, shopping centre, forest or bunkers.
I have always loved to study and expand my thinking. I’ve gathered understanding from contemporary art, from art philosophy and postmodern thinkers, from performance – and video art. Over the past years I have developed a framework to reflect on my own artistic practice from a theoretical perspective.
Researching a dialogue between human and space feels essential to me. I’m interested in the power dynamics and social themes which reflect into the sites and buildings. I value different spaces and consider them as my friends.
I ask myself: “What does this space want to say?”
I listen, sense and feel the space – then I work with the emotions that it evokes in me.
I don’t try to give answers – my priority is to raise questions about human actions.
Performances are a way to make different sites and my personal thoughts visible. Through performing I want to give a stage to the endless interesting surroundings that we live in and have the whole world as my studio.
