Viivi Lehto (born 1983) is an artist and designer, living and working in Helsinki. Her art is featured in many events, collections, solo and group exhibitions during last years including Chart Art Fair, UU Market Collection, Helsinki Design Week and Topelius Gallery. As an art practitioner her main material is glass, even the range of the materials and techniques used in her works is wide, from painting to art textiles and pattern design.
Lehto graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Design from Lahti Institute of Design, University of Applied Sciences 2009. Currently she is finalizing her Master studies in Aalto University, Visual Cultures, Curating & Contemporary Art Programme.
She is experienced also as a curator and design manager specialized in working with emerging artists and designers. For this work, the Finnish government presented in 2010 Viivi Lehto with the remarkable Sammontekijät award. The award was given to acknowledge Lehto for “courageously seeking out new forms of collaboration between the design field and other industries, and being recognized as a pioneer in her field.” The criteria for receiving the award were, amongst other things, creativity, innovativeness, functionality and novel thinking.
As an artist Lehto aims to create new, playful, often a bit twisted or whimsical versions of reality. Lehto believes art is a powerful tool to open new viewpoints by tickling the imagination. The Garden series she is currently working with, explores the themes of nature, inner growth and importance of play. Many of her works are connected to these themes and understanding traditions.
Lehto’s practice is connected to visual arts, creative thinking and design – she moves between different materials and mediums. In her process, she is typically using a multi-sensorial approach combining music, visual arts and working by hand.
She also acts as a teacher and facilitator; in her public workshops she is working with participants by using different art related techniques to unlock creative thinking. Lehto strongly believes art is everyman’s right and it is deeply connected to human nature.
