I wish to use the platform of presenting in this seminar as an opportunity to conduct a test run for my thesis work.
In my thesis, I will discuss the topic of wearability in the context of contemporary jewellery.
Instead of engaging in the heated yet seemingly futile effort of trying to define what kind of jewellery can be seen as wearable, like many other great minds and my peers have done already, I propose a new way of looking at the said topic. Wearing as an assemblage. A negotiation amongst the wearer, the object and the artist. Thus employing the wearing and the worn dynamic as a way of examining the agency of objects from a vital materialist point of view.
A series of jewellery or rather, wearable pieces will be created alongside a written text for the thesis. And the prototypes of the pieces are what I will be presenting during the seminar. Whether the final work will be a participatory one or an installation as commentary so to speak is yet to be decided. However, the presentation of the prototypes will be the one where I refrain from being the centre of the attention with excessive talking and simply invite the audience to engage with the work as they see fit. The reaction untainted by the artist’s input will be videotaped upon consent for research purpose.
